Individual techniques
We use the most effective techniques in psychotherapy to provide you with the tools you need to start your journey on the path towards healing.
telemental health
Telemental health involves the use of video calls in lieu of an in-office appointment. Telemental health is an option at times when an in-person appointment is not preferred or appropriate. Reasons vary from time constraints, difficulties with transportation, and health reasons. If you are continuing to avoid excess contact due to worries about exposure to COVID-19 or are under the weather yourself, telemental health is an option. All you need is a computer or smartphone. It is best if the device has a video camera so we can see each other. I use a HIPAA compliant platform called Simple Practice for video sessions. Many insurances cover this form of therapy. You should check with your insurance provider. All modalities except sand play can be offered through telemental health.
Sand Play Therapy
Psychological trauma can be deep-rooted and hard to describe with words. In these cases, Sand Play therapy allows nonverbal expression of inner feelings and conflict. When you construct a sand table with figures and shapes, you ascribe meaning to them that can be interpreted by your counselor. Modeling difficult situations, as well as role-playing techniques to deal with these situations in the real-world, encourages problem-focused thinking and enhanced perspective. In short, Sand Play empowers you to take control over past trauma and explore problem-solving strategies.

EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) utilizes your body’s physical reaction to psychological stress to naturally promote positive mental health. Distressing thoughts can manifest themselves physically through changes in body temperature, heart rate, brain activity, and fidgeting. By focusing the body on external stimulus, such as eye tracking, you can work along with your counselor to identify distressing thought patterns and focus treatment on the root of the trauma. In short, EMDR identifies deep-rooted trauma and transforms the body’s response to promote healing.
Trauma-focused Narrative Therapy
This therapy modality involves the titred exposure to traumatic memories through development of resources, telling the story in written, oral and pictorial forms.
Bowen Family Systems
More a theory to understand emotions and behavior, than a therapy per se. Bowen Family Systems theory consider the family as an emotional unit, both within the nuclear family and intergenerationally. It make sense of the patterns of cutoff, projection, even disability and illness we often see repeated in families. Raising self-differentiation is the means to reducing distress. Understanding is pursued through the use of genograms and exploration of family patterns.
Poetry Therapy
This is the latest addition to my therapy toolbox. The act of coalescing an emotion or experience into the language of metaphor, provides a healing distance from difficult experiences. The act of writing also brings awareness and vividness to our life experience. I have done some training in this modality through Sherry Reiter of the Righting Center and most recently with the Institute of Poetic Medicine. I will be offering Poetry for Wellness groups periodically.
